MEDELA, a global leader in medical device technology, successfully migrated from SAP Process Orchestration to SAP Integration Suite using Figaf’s automation tools. In just two months with Figaf, Medela transitioned a key subset of trading partners with minimal effort while achieving mapping accuracy and error-free deployment.
Key highlights include:
- AS-IS migration with Figaf’s Migration Tool, reducing developer workload through reusable functions
- Automated test case recording and payload comparison using the Testing Tool, helping catch conversion errors early
- Deployment visibility and version control via the DevOps Tool
- High mapping accuracy with test case recordings from SAP PO, supported by Figaf’s B2B script library to handle format differences
By leveraging Figaf’s Migration, Testing, and DevOps tools, the migration project was streamlined from start to finish and setting the stage for Medela to complete further partner migrations independently.
Key Comments from the Case
Giovanni Sellitto Global Senior Manager of IT Business Applications – Data Integration & Development, Medela
“We used Figaf for the project, which significantly accelerated the migration process. The transition went smoothly, with no defects reported by the partners we moved live, ensuring our relationships remained strong and uncompromised.. ”
Dave Pirsch Global Manager of IT Business Applications – Integration & Development, Medela
“The migrated mappings were spot on, thanks to Figaf; they were the last thing we had to worry about during the migration. We were able to leverage our existing mappings and which enabled us to speed up the process of migrating without impacting our relationships with our partners. “
Kishore Enumula, Figaf
“The automation that the Figaf tool provided made it easy to migrate the integration and then testing tool highlighted the necessary corrections to resolve the small outstanding issues. “
Case Background
MEDELA is a Swiss family-owned medical device company, founded in 1961 and headquartered in Baar, Switzerland. Specializing in research-based breast milk feeding and healthcare solutions, Medela serves individual mothers and clinical professionals in over 100 countries. With approximately 1,500 employees across 20 subsidiaries, Medela is the trusted healthcare choice for more than 6 million hospitals and homes globally.
MEDELA has partners in the US & the EU exchanging Orders, ASN, Invoice, Order Response, Functional Ack and so on
With the announced sunset of SAP PO, MEDELA wanted to move to SAP Integration Suite.
Figaf was chosen as a partner to migrate the initial subset of Partners while MEDELA wants to handle the rest by themselves. During the migration, the Figaf Migration Tool was used for doing the AS-IS migration while Figaf Testing Tool was used to do the payload comparison automatically with test case recordings from the SAP PO system. Lastly, the Figaf DevOps Tool to manage the Virtual QAS Tenant and Transports.
Migration Project Rundown
Project Timeline
Initially MEDELA agreed to showcase the Figaf capabilities choosing all possible combinations & complex mappings.
Upon seeing the effortless & successful migration results in the Scenario Test, MEDELA/Figaf agreed to take up the migration of the next 13 partners
The project was completed in roughly 2 months after the first PoC that covered learning path.
Towards the end of the project a speed of 1 mapping per day was achieved.
Scope
With the below list of Document type exchanged totaling >70 transactions over AS2/SFTP with 15 – X12 types, 4 – EDIFACT types & XML formats exchanged with mostly Message Mapping but also XSL & XSL with Java Ref.
Why Migrate to Integration Suite
MEDELA wanted to migrate from SAP PO because the end of support of SAP PI/PO and then reduce the integrations to only SAP Integration Suite. And then the strategy to move to Cloud.
Case Observations
Project Assessment and Planning
At the outset, MEDELA utilized Figaf’s Migration Report to gain a comprehensive overview of the project and conduct an accurate assessment. This early step helped establish a clear migration roadmap, ensuring better preparedness and resource allocation.
Migration Approach and Developer Efficiency
MEDELA opted for an AS-IS migration instead of creating new MIG-based MAGs, significantly reducing complexity. Figaf’s B2B Profile streamlined the process by enabling developers to reuse migrated standard functions, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual adjustments in mappings. While most functions migrated seamlessly, certain components—such as XSL with Java functions—still required manual intervention by developers.
Testing and Validation
Testing was a major success factor in the project, driven by Figaf’s Testing Tool. Developers could record test cases directly from SAP PO and migrate them to CPI iFlows with a single click. This also enabled detailed payload comparisons at various points in the process, including raw X12/EDI generation and conversion to EDI-XML. These capabilities helped quickly identify and resolve conversion errors, which made up most bugs, while minimizing testing effort.
Deployment and Version Control
Figaf’s DevOps Tool improved visibility and control during the migration. Teams could easily track deployed versions across tenants, compare differences, and view associated transport objects and their test results. This streamlined deployment management and reduced the risk of configuration errors.
Trading Partner and Mapping Management
Manual TPM transports were identified as a bottleneck, prompting Figaf to introduce new automation features for creating Trading Partner profiles and agreements. This enhancement simplified one of the more tedious aspects of migration. Additionally, mapping accuracy remained high when test case recordings from SAP PO were available. Figaf’s B2B script library also addressed differences between SAP PO B2B XSDs and SAP IS, reducing potential mapping errors and supporting efficient scenario testing with minimal effort.
Conclusion and status update
Improvements
- The project contributed valuable feedback that helped improve our Figaf tooling backlog and we were able to improve the tool, to simplify the migration journey, so it becomes much easier for customers to perform the migration.
- Improved TPM handling through Figaf
- Semi-Automated trading partner setup
- Create agreements when migrating a scenario.
- B2B Testing Profile for TPM agreements
- Transporting of Agreements
With Figaf’s tooling, Medela achieved a fast, low-risk migration to SAP Integration Suite. Moreover, this was accomplished without disrupting partner operations. The project’s success has laid the foundation for continued self-managed migration across the organization. Overall Figaf automates the migration journey with its feature rich product and enabled us to do the AS-IS migration smoother increasing the productivity of integration/Process consultants.
