IRT feature: Monitor SAP Cloud Platform Integration Content (CPI)

A few weeks ago we added an option to monitor your SAP PI/PO repository content, so you could see what was changed in any objects. And based on the changes you registered you could test the scenarios.

We have also enabled users to test SAP Cloud Integration so it made a lot of sense also to monitor the content so we could support full cycle development. So we can now monitor all changes to the content. So you can see what was changed in a script and what areas were changed in an iflow. The output may be a little technical but it will allow you to see that something was changed.

We also have the ticket content that allows you to register the changes that you are doing and ensuring that you are testing all of the changes that you are making. It is a way to ensure that enables you to document the changes in a better way than using Word documents for the information. You can then link your existing ticket/helpdesk system to the IRT tickets as an extra data source.

There is some features that we will improve in the comparison, so you can see the message mappings content and see the part that was changed. And also improve the comparison of scripts. It will come in a future release.

Latest Figaf IRT tool and Roadmap

With the newest release of Figaf IRT tool, we have been adding a lot of new functionality.

The Goldilocks Zone of Change management for SAP PI

Setting the correct change management procedure can be challenging. You need to capture the right things and not too much.

For one SAP PI/PO client, I just had to do development in Dev, and then move to production to test. I was really uncomfortable doing this.
Another client requires a lot more effort to do the transportations needed. Here is multiple checks and validations to do transports. Here it takes too long time to do something.

That is the reason I believe there is a Goldilocks zone for change management you need to do not too little and not too much.

In many places, people are just trying to implement the same changes that they have to do ERP changes. Which is probably not ideal for transporting SAP PI/PO objects. I have been spending a lot of time making documentation that was not ideal.

In my example where I had to change a field in the XML formats it would be nice if I could mark the changes and then use it. The more manual work you are going to do the more difficult it will be to make the documentation and ensure it is correct. And how do you find it when it is necessary. So at the client, I worked where we had a lot of documentation we could just capture a few lines text about what we had done on the interface. Finding it again would be difficult because how did you find the message mapping information.

 

For SAP PI/PO we are working to improve our Change Tracking tool that allows you to do better change management on your landscape. We have currently been looking at just directory objects, but in the next, release we will also have documentation of repository objects. This will allo you to assign a ticket and a description of why something was changed. You can then see for a message mapping when something was changed in it and why. You can also do an easy comparing between the versions to find the differences.

SAP PI/PO change tracking tool is now free

I love getting ideas on how to easier to complete a boring task for SAP PI/PO developers.
I believe quite a few of you remembered the PIDocumenter that I created ten years ago. It was a PHP application that could generate an Excel document with the mapping. This function is now standard with Netweaver Developer Studio, though I would say my version was better formatted. That solution became deprecated because the method to get the XMI file was blocked.
One and a half year ago I started working on a tool to make the testing easier on SAP PI/PO. One of the functions we had could make a comparison of XML documents and read the directory API to understand the landscape. It would be simple to combine the two function to compare a directory comparison function.

I have been working at different places where there was a requirement to document what was transported. And I thought it was difficult(too manual) and time-consuming. But there was not a system in place to handle it so things could be changed so it was out of sync. So I wanted to make a tool that could help in the process.

It became the Change Tracking Tool(CTT).

CTT is a tool that will allow you to find what is changed on any objects, like which switch is changed.
In the Swing tool or NWDS, you can see the different versions of an object. It is though difficult to see which specific field was changed in a change. That is one of the use cases CTT helps with.

The other problem is about registering which change is affecting which objects. This way you can have an easy overview of the changes that are happening in your landscape. So you can register the changes on your change number, so you can easily track the changes together with what happened.

It has was given as a bonus to people buying IRT (Integration Regression Tool). It did though not match which what those organizations were looking for. So now you can get it for free. CTT is a part of the installation IRT so once installed you will have access to both functions. IRT is still a licensed product; you can obtain a trial license to try it out.
